Although the Silverado 1500 has been around for more than 25 years, we wouldn’t suggest going quite that far back when looking for your next used pickup, unless you’re a collector. Instead, your best bet is to go back to the end of the third generation at the furthest, which was updated and refreshed for the 2016 model year. You can find a variety of great features and performance on trucks following that point, with a powerful new diesel engine added for the 2017 model and plenty of options for configurations and more. If you’re looking for more modern features, go with a fourth-generation Silverado 1500, which was launched in the 2019 model year. (Note that some third-generation models were still made that year and sold as the Silverado LD, so keep that in mind when considering different options.) A fourth-generation Silverado 1500 is the perfect choice for big power and robust capabilities, thanks to updated engines like the standard 2.7L TurboMax. Although Trail Boss models of the Silverado 1500 are great for going off-road, the addition of the off-road-focused ZR2 trim for the 2022 model is an especially impressive option if you want to conquer the most demanding trails. When properly equipped, a modern Silverado 1500 can handle more than 10,000 lbs of towing and more than 2,000 lbs of payload.

Chevy Silverado HD: Tremendous Capabilities to Do More

If the Silverado 1500’s capability still doesn’t quite meet your needs, you want to look for a used Chevy Silverado HD model. A couple of powerful options are available. The right one generally depends on exactly what level of performance you’re looking for. These are both full-size trucks that are built to get some serious work done, so they’re not ideal for every driver, but they’re perfect for professionals in trades who need a pickup built to keep going strong for a long time.

If you’re looking for a direct power upgrade from the Silverado 1500, then a used Chevy Silverado 2500 HD is a great choice. The Silverado 2500 HD has many of the same great features as the light-duty model, giving you plenty of great configuration options and trim levels to choose from. It can handle more work than the Silverado 1500, however, so you can get a used truck built to do more. Specific capabilities depend on different features of each truck, but a Silverado 2500 HD can handle about 20,000 lbs of towing and more than 3,000 lbs of payload when properly equipped.

For the most robust capabilities in a used Chevy, you need to check out the Silverado 3500 HD. This is the way to go if you’re looking for something that can handle a massive amount of work. In particular, a model with a dual rear-wheel (DRW) setup is the best choice if you need a tremendous payload rating or want to haul tremendous weight using the fifth wheel or gooseneck towing. When properly equipped, a DRW Silverado 3500 HD can handle more than 30,000 lbs of fifth wheel towing and more than 7,000 lbs of payload.
